Wu Family Garden (Former Tainan Public Hall)(吳園(原台南公會堂))

Traveler rating:4 76 Reviews

Sunday:07:30 – 23:00

The Wu Family Garden (吳園) is one of the most interesting historic sites in Tainan, and from Minquan Road (民權路) the first glimpse of the site will be of the Tainan Public Hall (台南公會堂) building constructed of a Baroque style, and which blends on one side into the Day Break 18 Teahouse (十八卯茶屋) built in a Japanese wood structure style and which features on another side a classical flower garden built in a Chinese style. The flower garden is now encircled at the rear by tall buildings, and in this place there is a strange feeling of the crisscrossing of generations as buildings from different decades all sit side by side. On an average afternoon, the lawn and steps in front of the Wu Family Garden are full of crowds of people sunbathing or chatting and enjoying a picnic. There may also be groups of people standing in the Chinese style flower garden feeding carp and enjoying a quiet respite from the hustle and bustle elsewhere. Day Break 18 Teahouse is also popular, and the Public Hall often features all kinds of art exhibitions, thereby ensuring that this place is a treasure trove not only of architectural merit but also of living and breathing art and culture.

    Really worth a visit...

The Association of Tainan Public Hall, close to Wu's Garden was built in 1911. The hall itself contains a lot of information on this area. The Willow House Japanese Restaurant is also here, built in 1934 and seldom used now. Lovely area to walk around and feel the history here and of course enjoy the garden.

Nice Wu Garden in the back ....

    Traveler rating:4 2018-12

We looked at two art exhibitions inside the building while we were there: a Japanese painter on the ground floor, and a photography exhibition of major city scenes in the basement. Both, I felt were mediocre art. We came for the gardens in the back, which we found very relaxing. Water features (with fish and turtles) and grass, trees and bushes and various places to sit down and chill out for a while. There are toilets on the ground floor of the Center right as you go in to the right. If you are tired of fighting scooters and languishing at traffic lights, come here for a respite.

    Nice place to stay

I think it's acceptable that walk to there from train station, it isn't fair away. It's a quiet place to take a rest when you feel tired. You can walk around and take a look the beautiful scenery, paying the attention on the wonderful landscape. Drinking some tasty tea when listening the history of Wuyuan. Sometimes, there will some activity like performance or you can buy some food for the fish! Hoping you enjoy the quiet surrounding feeling of Wuyuan and relax your mind with your family, friends or yourself. But don’t fall asleep because of the relaxed atmosphere!

Historic Building with a small garden in Tainan

    Traveler rating:3 2017-01

A historic building including a Japanese style wooden building (with tea house inside) and also a small Chinese style pond. Buildings are well maintained and is within walking distance from Chihkan Tower.

    Secret garden with sad history

    Traveler rating:4 2016-10

A garden hind in the city. It was a private property but was occupied by the Japanese and a city convention hall was built. However a part of the garden in Chinese style was preserved. There was a pond , a line of old building and an artificial mountain. It surprise me that the artificial mountain is small but there were tunnels that you may play hind and seek there. A place you can relax and visit. Walking distance to the railway station. Open to public as a garden free.
