Tainan Great South Gate(臺灣府城大南門)

Traveler rating:3.5 43 Reviews

Friday:Open 24 hours a day

Situated not far from the southern edge of the Confucian temple (孔廟) is one of Tainan’s most well preserved city gates. With a history stretching back close to 290 years and one side featuring a monument to stories of past times, the gate sits serenely in the public park’s banyan tree forest, its air of superiority to ward off outside enemies long since dissipated. Currently, it sits more like a decorated old general retired from his duties and returning to life on the fields; like a paternalistic grandfather accompanying everyone in the old town, and silently watching it as it matures and changes. In a previous life, there would have been none of the bright and beautiful countenance of today, and in times gone by it only would have been those keeping watch over the city walls with whom it might be able to keep some company. As far as the townsmen living within the city walls of those days were concerned, this was a barrier of safety and part of the fabric of daily life. At that time the outer barbican entrance to the city was shaped like a moon to aid in fighting the enemy, and this style is known as a crescent-shaped barbican. These days, the gate has become a place where people gather to listen to concerts under moonlight, a testament to the gate’s lunar name and origins.

Good as part of a day of walking the sites downtown

Small place really but you do get to climb up to the top, and the overall area is very nice. Cool tree growing into the wall - kind of like a small example of what you see at Angkor Wat. As part of entire day of walking this is just one of many sites that in total make for a great day.

One of four remaining gates ...

I'm curious where the other three gates are that are still in existence? Whether the original or remodel, this current version gives you a sense of what the original must have been like ... Easy to walk around. Few people around at this sight.

    Nothing much

This is one of the old gates built during the Chinese rule hundreds of years ago. Unfortunately, it was rebuilt as the original was destroyed already. Otherwise, there wasn’t much to see here.

    Ancient city gate

South Gate is located inside a park. So, it is nice to take a walk around. As a city gate, it is not big like a miniature, or it seems like a small fortress.

    Nothing special

An old gate. The only interesting part is a tree growing out of a part of a wall with the roots on the outside of the wall. Otherwise there really is nothing worth visiting this site for.
