Things to Do
  • Strolling Through Xinhua: Starting from the Old Street
Xinhua District was originally a Siraya settlement historically known as "Tavokan," associated with the traditional festival "Tavokan Eighteen Rao," which has distinctive religious features, and its terrain is known in feng shui as the "Bagua spider's lair." The district features Hutoupi Reservoir, Taiwan's first reservoir, as well as NCHU Xinhua Forest Station and Tavokan Cultural District. Annual events include the Lunar New Year market, the wind band festival, the golden shower tree blossom season, and the May Music Festival. Selected as one of Taiwan's Classic Towns in 2020, Xinhua brings together history, food, and nature for a rewarding journey. Come and enjoy a feast for the ears and the palate in Xinhua!
  • Exploring the Fossil Cradle of Zuojhen
Situated in southeastern Tainan, Zuojhen features low yet ruggedly rolling hills. Under distinctive geological conditions, cuestas, ravines, meandering streams, and cliffs have formed a landscape proverbially described as "not three continuous miles of flat land." As Taiwan's "Cradle of Fossils," Zuojhen serves as a vital paleontological research base. From September to October, silvergrass blooms across Caoshan, presenting a seasonal vista. After admiring the sunrise, explore scenic highlights such as Tsao Shan Moon World, Hill 308, and the Erliao sunrise viewpoint. You can also visit Tainan City Zuojhen Fossil Park, Yaoyue Suspension Bridge, and Karma Kagyu Temple, making it perfect for a badlands and fossil tour.
  • Touring Danei: Badland Wonders and the Home of Avocados
Danei District yields Taiwan's largest avocado harvest, earning the moniker "Home of Avocados." It is also home to striking badlands; besides viewing them from Tsou Ma Lai Farm, visiting Erxi Moon World reveals how the Zengwen River carved winding channels into chalky mudstone, creating a new hotspot for social media photos. Beyond dramatic badland landscapes, travelers can visit the orchid biotechnology center to discover high-tech smart cultivation and enjoy hands-on orchid planting. Meanwhile, the Tainan Astronomical Education Area boasts Taiwan's largest lowland telescope and the island's first digital dome 3D planetarium theater, with stargazing tours every Saturday evening. Visitors of all ages are welcome to enjoy an astronomy and technology journey in Danei!
  • The Beautiful Century-Old Waterworks Museum
Characterized by undulating hills, Shanshang was historically a resettlement area for the indigenous Siraya Sinckan community. Set upon river terraces along the Zengwen River, it appeared as a village perched on high ground when viewed from below, earning it the historic name "Shanziding" (Hilltop), later renamed "Shanshang." Tainan ranks second nationwide in papaya cultivation acreage, with Shanshang serving as a primary production area, acclaimed as the "Hometown of Papayas." Beyond the century-old waterworks museum, the area features the Orchid Botanical Garden, Nanzhou Kailing Temple (where a sacred golden shower tree is venerated), a Japanese-style Catholic church, and the Lin Bao Old Residence blending Chinese and Western architectural styles. Come and enjoy an enriching stroll through the hills!
