Introduce

The Tourism and Travel Bureau of Tainan City Government is partnering with the Department of Tourism Management at Kun Shan University to continue running the “Tainan Tour Drive Foreign Language and Tourism Empowerment Program” in order to enhance the quality of friendly tourism services in Tainan, and promote international tourism. The tour driver foreign language and tourism empowerment course targeted at tour bus drivers, taxi drivers, and hire car companies in the city tour drivers with an opportunity for continued development. This year, foreign language reception conversation training will expand from English, Japanese, and Korean, to include basic reception conversation in Vietnamese. The new addition will hopefully help operators with the reception of travelers and enhance internationally friendly tourism services in Tainan City.

Tainan City Mayor Wei-che Huang noted that as the city covers such a large area, the mobility and convenience offered by taxis and private cars make up for deficiencies in public transport. They also provide small tour groups with a convenient mode of transportation for traveling between regions. Taxi drivers’ familiarity with the local food and entertainment makes them the natural choice for servicing backpackers. City Government began organizing reception service training courses for taxis, rental cars, and bus operators in 2011. Last year (2022), the Tourism and Travel Bureau of Tainan City Government partnered with the Department of Tourism Management of Kun Shan University to run the “Tainan Tour Driver Foreign Language and Tourism Empowerment Program.” 45 professional drivers successfully completed the training program and received their graduation certificate! Bus operators said that thanks to the training, drivers were able to respond confidently to foreign travelers. They also passed the Taiwan Trip exam with flying colors; car rental companies and taxi drivers that took part in the training thanked City Government for the training opportunity as well. The improvement to the foreign language and tourist reception skills helped professional drivers provide international travelers with better travel services.

According to Kuo-hua Lin, Acting Director-General of the Tourism and Travel Bureau, it is now summer, the peak travel season, and all the scenic areas of Tainan are now crowded with people on public holidays. International travelers are continuing to flood into Tainan as well now that the border restrictions have been limited. Continued improvements are therefore being made to the empowerment program to welcome travelers from different countries. Non-stop flights between Tainan and Ho Chih-Min City also resumed on January 11 this year (2023). In response to the increase in number of visitors from Vietnam, a basic Vietnamese course was added alongside the English, Japanese, and Korean courses this year to help professional drivers master more languages for traveler services.

As the organizers, the Department of Tourism Management at Kun Shan University (KSU) indicated that the bus operator component of the new training course included the tourism resources and from the Taiwan Trip Mountain Line and Museum Route, Route 88 and Route 99 buses. Frequently used reception conversation, and passenger etiquette. The course for taxi drivers, hire cars, and car companies emphasized international etiquette, reception technique, and innovative services and practical reception English/Japanese/Korean. In response to the resumption of Taiwan-Vietnam routes, a new Vietnamese language course was added that will help taxi drivers and hire cars prepare to receive international visitors. The training courses will be held on July 18 (Tue), August 8 (Wed), and September 6 (Wed). All professional drivers in Tainan City are welcome to enroll!
