The international gourmet magazine Michelin Guide announced yesterday (12th) the June additions to its restaurant guide. Two Tainan restaurants made the list: “Mao Su” in the East District and “A Hui Oden” in the South District. The inclusion of creative Asian plant-based cuisine and local street food with almost half a century of history represented international recognition of Tainan’s culinary scene. Local and overseas travelers are invited to visit Tainan and try out its varied cuisine.
Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che noted that 7 Tainan restaurants made the cut between January and May this year. Two more were then added in the June issue of the “Michelin Guide.” Tainan now has 35 restaurants recommended by Bib Gourmand, and 28 Michelin Selected restaurants for a total of 63 listed. Tainan's reputation as the “Food Capital” is the result of hard work by food vendors. The list of recommended eateries will undoubtedly continue to grow and all kinds of delicious foods will be discovered as well. Local and overseas travelers are welcome to visit Tainan and follow in the footsteps of the Michelin Guide to enjoy everything that Tainan has to offer!
Director-General Lin Kuo-hua from the Tourism Bureau stated that out of the two newly listed restaurants in June, “Mao Su” in the East District is a subsidiary of the local food & beverage group “Rich Boat International Co., Ltd.” Mao Su specializes in plant-based Asian cuisine and promotes a healthy diet. Natural, unprocessed foods are fused with Asian influences such as satay from the South Seas, chili from Sichuan, and kimchi from Korea. The Michelin inspector made a special mention of “Basil Vegan Sausage” where oyster mushrooms went through a complex process involving hand-shredding, skewering, blanching, and grilling to recreate the crispy texture of sausages. The result was then stir-fried with a secret sauce to produce a delicious, salty flavor that even non-vegans will love. “A Hui Oden” from the South District is a local eatery that has been in business for nearly fifty years. Its very reasonably priced street food dishes are popular with locals and visitors alike, so it is always crowded in the afternoons. The fried oden is highly recommended for its crispy skin and bouncy texture. The oden stew with its soft, juicy oden is even more delicious. The small sausage in large sausage is well worth trying, too. The glutinous sausage has a soft texture and peanut fragrance. Inside is a delicious sausage that is fatty without being too greasy. It also has a rich texture and charcoal-grilled fragrance!
According to the Tourism Bureau, a variety of exciting events will coincide with the graduation season in June. These include Follow Sababoy on a Religious Pilgrimage - Collect Digital Stamps and Win! (4/28 ~ 6/30), the Tainan City Double-Decker Food Bus Experience (6/8 ~ 9/22), the 2024 Baihe Lotus Festival (May ~ July), and From Raphael to van Gogh: Masterpieces from the National Gallery, London (5/2 ~ 9/1). Visitors and students are welcome to visit Tainan to take part in the exciting activities, visit the sights, and enjoy all kinds of great food.
