The “Tree of Life” located at Qinkushen Fan-shaped Salt Fields is the result of a collaboration between the Tourism Bureau of Tainan City Government and artist Yang Shih-yi  . Having won the “US Muse Design Awards” in March earlier this year, the installation has now won the “NY Architectural Design Award” as well. Mayor Huang Wei-che stated that the Qinkunshen Fan-shaped Salt Fields is one of the 100 Taiwan Tourism Spotlights announced by the MNOTC Tourism Administration. The winning of two consecutive top international design awards represented recognition of City Hall’s efforts. The beauty of Tainan’s natural landscape is now making waves on the international stage.

The NY Architectural Design Award is a highly-respected award dedicated to recognizing outstanding architectural design around the world. According to artist Yang Shih-yi  , the original design concept sought to encourage people to venture into the salt fields, feel the sunlight on their face, and remember the hardships of salt workers in the old days. They can then seek inner tranquility within the broad expanse of the salt fields. The installation sought to highlight the features of the salt industry and marine culture, encourage tourists to embrace and respect the sea, remember the past, and look to the future of the salt industry.

Director-General Lin Kuo-hua from the Tourism Bureau noted that the “Tree of Life” is based on the fan-shaped outline of the salt fields with sharp lines that symbolize the sunlight essential to salt fields. The artwork combines the beauty and spirit of the fan-shaped salt fields to promote both ecological education and appreciation for water. The variations in light and shadow highlighted by the sculpted forms of the art installation emphasized the importance of sunlight and time. Thanks to the efforts and contributions of the design team, the work has been recognized by international awards. We will continue to embrace our responsibility to make Tainan a “better and happier” place.
