The land art installation “Tree of Life” at Qinkushen Fan-shaped Salt Fields is the result of a collaboration between the Tourism Bureau of Tainan City Government and artist Yang Shih-yi. After receiving the prestigious “Muse Design Award” in the U.S. in March this year, the installation has continued its success by winning Silver at the “NY Architectural Design Awards” and Gold at the “London Design Awards.” Mayor Huang Wei-che noted that at this significant 400-year milestone for Tainan, the Tree of Life stands as a symbol of resilience, having garnered three international design awards. He thanked the city government teams involved and the design collaborators for their efforts in elevating Tainan's breathtaking natural landscapes to the global stage.
According to artist Yang Shih-yi, the original design concept sought to encourage people to venture into the salt fields, feel the sunlight on their face, and remember the hardships of salt workers in the old days. They can then seek inner tranquility within the broad expanse of the salt fields. The installation sought to highlight the features of the salt industry and marine culture, encourage tourists to embrace and respect the sea, remember the past, and look to the future of the salt industry. Unveiled as the world was emerging from the pandemic, the Tree of Life and its central pathway symbolize a steadfast spirit in the face of adversity, inviting everyone to move bravely towards the light, filled with hope and resilience.

Lin Guo-hua, Director of the Tourism Bureau of the Tainan City Government, noted that since its opening in late August last year until July this year, the Tree of Life installation has drawn more than 750,000 visitors to take in the surrounding sights, including Jiangjun Fishing Port, the Fan-Shaped Salt Fields, and the Qinkunshen Community, with many stopping to take memorable photos. The city will continue to promote local highlights in conjunction with nearby attractions. On September 14-15, the 2024 Coastal Radiance Festival will be held at Jiangjun Fishing Port, offering activities such as hot air balloon tethered rides, a light sculpture music concert, coastal mini-tours, the Radiance Market, as well as a “Cycling Radiance Tour” and a “Coastal Stamp Collection Challenge.” The public is invited to experience the vibrant life of the fishing port and continue to enjoy the stunning coastal landscapes and local delicacies of Tainan.
