Tainan City Mayor Huang Wei-che has revealed the Q1 traffic report for the Travel Tainan website now that the first quarter of 2025 is over. According to Mayor Huang, the report is proof that Tainan is continuing to generate strong interest in the travel market and a window into changing travel trends. The improved understanding of traveler needs provided by the data will help the city attract more visitors by introducing content that people want.
First was the ranking for online visitors by city. Kaohsiung City and Taipei City have been the top sources of visitors to the Travel Tainan website now for two straight years. Tokyo in Japan also made it into No. 10 for two straight years as well and was the only overseas city to do so. Tokyo ranking higher than some other Taiwanese cities is reflected in the data for overseas traffic, too.
In terms of overseas traffic, the top five have remained the same for two consecutive years. First place was Tainan’s good friend Japan, which has held the top spot in recent years. From second to fifth place were Hong Kong, Singapore, U.S., and South Korea respectively, indicative of the high interest in Tainan among travelers from these regions.
Users were most interested in “practical information” with the “Stay One Night Get One Night Free in Tainan in April and May” accommodation promotion generating the most click-throughs. The article quickly overtook all of its “predecessors” in just two weeks after the press conference on March 18 to take first place in Q1. In the News section, the most viewed articles was the “beginner’s guide” to the four New Year shopping streets in 2025; the Tourism Bureau said that after analyzing the top 50 articles in Events and News, they found that outside of topical events, “information about promotions” and “curated content” such as beginners’ guides and planned itineraries all generated clicks due to public interest and usefulness.
Finally, the top ten sights on the website by level of interest were: Sicao Green Tunnel, Shanhua Cow Market, Yuguang Island, Anping Old Fort, Anping Old Street, Garden Night Market, Taiwan Orchid Plantation, Jinshali Pink Shower Tree Trail, and Shennong Street. First-place winner Sicao Green Tunnel in particular has dominated the rankings in recent years and places well ahead of the runner-up. Runner-up this was the Shanhua Cow Market. The market placed 9th last year but was catapulted into 2nd place this quarter by a 42% surge in traffic that reflected growing interest in this traditional market and its century-old history; the Jinshali Pink Shower Tree Trail in Xigang may have been affected by the colder weather this year as the flowers only bloomed in earnest at the end of March, unlike last year when they bloomed at the start of March. As a result, its rank dropped from 6th to 9th place; the Garden Night Market and Taiwan Orchid Plantation beat out the Jingzijiao Tile-Paved Salt Fields and Tainan Art Museum Building 2, the 10th place holders from last year. The shift may be due to culinary shows and the international orchid exhibition in Q1.
Director-General Lin Kuo-hua from the Tainan City Government Tourism Bureau said that the Bureau will continue to monitor changes in preferences and optimize the website content accordingly. He hopes the website will help tourists, residents, and overseas travelers get all the information about Tainan’s travel highlights, meet their need for itinerary planning and real-time information during their travels, and share all the great places to visit in Tainan with other people. Lin also encourages everyone to actually visit Tainan after looking at the top searches.
