The Tourism Bureau currently has 19 walking tour routes and training for tour guides and volunteer guides was held today (20th). The refresher training focused on local culture and guiding techniques for the professional tour guides responsible for leading the Bureau’s walking tours. Comparisons with foreign tourism city experiences and reinforcement of gender equality rights were also used to keep their guiding techniques up to date.

Tainan City Mayor Huang Wei-che said that Tainan is a city with a long history and rich culture. In addition to local culinary specialties, there is also a great deal of historical and cultural heritage that is worth exploring by every visitor to Tainan, so they can discover the cultural charm of Fucheng. Mayor Huang noted that modern life can be rather hectic. The tour guide training will hopefully allow more tour guides to lead visitors on a slow tour of the city's historical context and cultural atmosphere. Visitors can then come to appreciate the sophistication of Tainan in a more gentle and respectful manner.

Director-General Lin Kuo-hua from the Tourism Bureau said that two professional instructors were invited for the training session this time to improve the professionalism of the tour guides and travel quality. The instructors were lecturer Kuo Heng-an from the Tainan Community University and gender equality expert Liao Chia-li recommended by the Gender Equality Office of Tainan City Government. The training will not only improve the quality of guided tours but also reinforce awareness of gender equality concepts. The Tourism Bureau will continue to arrange related professional training courses in the future. The goal is to build up a team of professional and caring tour guides that can work together to build a solid foundation for sustainable tourism in Tainan.

The Tourism Bureau stated that the latest training featured extensive and practical content on travel and gender equality concepts, with “sustainability and inclusivity, enjoy the process, slow pace” as the core philosophy. The Bureau also launched the “Central-West District Gender-Friendly Map” featuring all gender-friendly stores and toilets in the area. Tour guides leading tourists on an in-depth exploration of Tainan can also communicate the concepts of gender equality and friendly inclusion at the same time. This will hopefully see tour guides introduce tourists to the beauty of Tainan from a broader perspective. To recognize the tour guides for their active participation, all participants in the training were presented with a certificate by the Tourism Bureau. It is hoped that the training will be applied as necessary during actual tours and serve as an important bridge linking the city and tourists.

The Tainan guided walking tours launched by the Tourism Bureau cover the Central-West District, Anping District, South District, Yongkang District, Xinhua District, Yanshuei District, Guanziling in Baihe District, Xinying District, Xiaying District, and Madou District. There are currently 19 walking tour routes, including 12 regular routes, and 7 free on-request routes. There are also 3 on-request paid routes provided local associations or merchants. Each route offers a wide variety of content with different themes and features. Interested members of the public can book online for a walking tour or the streets and alleyways in the Old City with tour guides and local volunteer guides in order to experience the wonders of Tainan City culture.
