Tainan City Adds Four Green Mark Hotels in New Milestone for Promotion of Sustainable Tourism

Introduce
Tainan City Government is continuing to promote the “Green Lifestyle - Green Travel” initiative in response to the trend towards low-carbon, environmentally friendly and sustainable tourism. The push to encourage local and overseas travelers to prioritize staying at Green Mark hotels was welcomed and embraced by the industry. According to the latest Green Mark application updates published by the Ministry of the Environment (MOENV), another four Green Mark hotels have been added in Tainan City including Hotel Cozzi (Ximen, Tainan), The Place Tainan, Crown Plaza Tainan, and Just Sleep Tainan Hushan. This brings the total number of Green Mark hotels in Tainan City to 14.
Mayor Huang Wei-che indicated that the City Hall is not only continuing to actively mentor and promote the development of the tourism industry but has also made sustainable tourism one of its top policy objectives. The Tourism Bureau has organized a range of professional international training and counseling to date, including Global Sustainable Tourism Council Sustainable Tourism Training Program (GSTC STTP), and Global Green Destinations Awards. Competency on sustainable development of the tourism industry was also strengthened in support of the relevant regulations under the Tainan City Self-Government Ordinance for Net Zero and Sustainable City Management (臺南市淨零永續城市管理自治條例). City Government is also continuing to encourage operators to obtain related domestic/overseas certifications/marks through public award ceremonies and on-site exchanges. The goal is to turn Tainan City into a leader in sustainable tourism. Mayor Huang added that sustainable tourism is not just an important policy of Tainan City but also a crucial commitment to upgrading the long-term competitiveness of the city. The growing number of Green Mark hotels reflects positively on Tainan tourism’s commitment to the environment and the future. It also provides local and overseas travelers with an opportunity to actually participate in low-carbon travel. It is worthwhile to note that the Tourism Bureau was awarded the first “Award for Contribution to Sustainable Tourism” at the 2025 Taiwan Festival Tourism Awards in recognition of the City Hall’s outstanding promotion of sustainable tourism.
Director-General Lin Kuo-hua from the Tourism Bureau pointed out that all city departments are working together to realize the goals of the net zero, sustainable city, and building long-term industry partnerships. In recent years, the Green Mark, energy-efficiency subsidy, and smart carbon reduction information sessions hosted by the City Hall were all enthusiastically attended by large numbers of vendors. There is therefore a high level of interest among the local industry regarding sustainability issues. The four newly added Green Mark hotels were all benchmark-setters in their respective administrative districts as well. Tainan City currently has 14 Green Mark hotels and this amounts to nearly 10% of the 153 certificates issued nationwide already. Director-General Lin expressed his hope that the Green Mark hotels can set an example for the rest of the accommodation industry to accelerate their shift towards sustainable development and give sustainable tourism in Tainan another boost.
Director-General Lin also added that the Tainan Local Industry Indigenous Region Sustainable Mini-Tour Revitalization Plan (產業原鄉永續小旅行振興計畫) is now accepting applications to encourage local travel agencies to organize groups for in-depth tourism in Tainan. Additional subsidies are provided for staying at Green Mark hotels, dining at low-carbon restaurants, and the use of public transport. In the future, City Hall will continue to use policy guidance and resource integration to help businesses enhance their sustainable management ability. This will transform Tainan into the preferred city for sustainable travel by local and overseas travelers, and further enhance Tainan’s image and status in the international travel market.
