The Michelin Guide, the world-renowned gourmet guide, announced today (12th) its Bib Gourmand picks for 2025. 30 restaurants from Tainan made the list. A new addition was “Lian Wu Chiao Lamb Soup,” which won the unanimous approval of world-class food reviewers from a field of popular local diners, local seafood, and exotic cuisine. Local and international travelers are welcome to follow the Michelin Guide in developing their own pocket list of great restaurants for a foodie tour of Tainan.
Mayor Huang Wei-che stated that Tainan was the first city to be developed in Taiwan, so it boasts four centuries of cultural history and culinary culture. The efforts of its many chefs have helped Tainan establish its brand as a food capital. This year’s Bib Gourmand saw “Lian Wu Chiao Lamb Soup” become the first restaurant from Xinhua to make the list. If we count the 34 Michelin-rated restaurants, that means 64 restaurants in Tainan have now received the nod from Michelin’s professional reviewers. Mayor Huang thanked Tainan’s restaurants for their dedication and hoped that more food & beverage providers would make the Michelin Guide in the future. Their demonstration of culinary expertise will showcase Tainan to the world through its great food!
Director-General Lin Kuo-hua of the Tourism Bureau explained that Bib Gourmand is intended for restaurants where diners can enjoy three quality dishes (excluding beverages) for less than NT$1000. The newly listed “Lian Wu Chiao Lamb Soup” from Tainan features freshly slaughtered lamb delivered daily, served in Angelica soup that has been simmered for at least four hours. Its great taste has been passed down for over 70 years. Visitors from all around Taiwan are encouraged to catch the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle “168 Houbi Old Street Route” for a micro-trip through Xinhua. Tainan is home to a wide variety of distinctive restaurants. He invites everyone to come and create their very own foodie map of Tainan.
“Dong Shang Taiwanese Seafood” has been recommended by the Bib Gourmand for four consecutive years. Its head chef, Tsai Jui-cheng, has been cooking for charity for more than ten years as well. Chef Tsai thanked Bib Gourmand for its recommendation and promised to continue reaching out to society through his cooking and share the rewards in the same way. Chou Jung-tang from “Zhu Xin Ju,” which has also been recognized by the Bib Gourmand for four straight years, said they are just an ordinary restaurant in Tainan. He thanked the international food guide for giving local and international tourists the opportunity to enjoy the hospitality of Tainan. He also hoped that the delicious dishes he serves up would encourage everyone to revisit Tainan and learn about the rich history of Laogushi Old Street. The local diner “Xie Shopkeeper” was proud of continuing to win over the taste buds of world-class reviewers through his seafood stew made with the freshest local seafood in the southern Taiwan soup-rice style. He thanked the reviewers for recognizing the restaurants’ commitment to good cooking.
