Tainan has been recognized internationally as a food capital again, with the UK magazine Time Out naming Tainan as one of the “Best Places to Travel in Asia 2025” Tainan had previously made “The Cool List 2024” of the National Geographic Traveller magazine in the UK, and CNN Travel’s Best Places to Visit in 2024. It has now started 2025 with another nod from the UK magazine Time Out and was the only Taiwanese city to make the list.

The Time Out report looked at great street food in Asia that global travelers should try for themselves due to their great taste and value. Mayor Huang Wei-che said that Tainan is the birthplace of Taiwanese history and its food capital. In Tainan, every restaurant has its own unique stock for making the popular “Beef Soup.” Travelers should take a stroll through the old streets past the red lanterns and admire the beauty of the side streets. The report also noted that visitors to Tainan can enjoy their fill of street food such as oyster omelet and coffin sandwich. The more adventurous can even try the fried eel noodles and stinky tofu.

Director-General Lin Kuo-hua from the Tourism Bureau of Tainan City Government said that street food has always been a source of civic pride in Tainan. Locals believe that their local diner serves up the best food. Tainan being named by the Time Out magazine as the only Taiwanese city in the top 10 Asian cities for street food is proof that it is the best city for travelers from around the world to visit. In return, Tainan will show the world its history as the first city to be developed in Taiwan, as well as its many historic buildings, temple artworks, and rich culinary heritage. Thanks go out to all restaurants and food & beverage vendors in Tainan for continuing to hone their culinary skills and working together to give Tainan its own unique taste!

The Garden Night Market indicated its surprise at the international spotlight on the night market culture and street food of Tainan. It thanked all gourmands, vendors, and local supporters for putting the Garden Night Market on the Asian foodie map.

The Tourism Bureau stated that the “Four Seasons Banduo by Tainan Master Chefs” event, launched this year, invited Tsong-phoo-sai (master caterers) from throughout Tainan to prepare a banquet in the menu-free format using seasonal local ingredients at famous tourist attractions in Tainan. The event is more than just a showcase for the diversity of banduo culture. It also serves to carry on the banquet spirit of Tainan to provide tourists from throughout Taiwan with a culinary journey that will surprise their eyes and taste buds. The Spring and Summer sessions held so far were all sold out and well-received. Tourists are welcome to bookmark the Travel Tainan website to make sure they don’t miss the latest news on the upcoming Fall and Winter sessions.
