Tainan City Mayor Huang Wei-che has spared no effort in lobbying for international flights at Tainan Airport. After many years of negotiations by the Tourism Bureau and the rest of the City Hall, new international routes are now being set up in partnership with Tigerair Taiwan, with the “Tainan-Kumamoto” and “Tainan-Okinawa” routes planned by the end of the year. The new development represents a major breakthrough in Tainan’s efforts to expand its international travel market.
Mayor Huang said that Tainan, Kumamoto, and Okinawa are the most attractive destinations for Japan and Taiwan, respectively. The two cities also have close links to Tainan in terms of history, culture, food, tourism, and regional exchange. Both Kumamoto and Tainan are now home to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) fabs. They are also famed for their hot spring resources and delicious local cuisines. Kumamon, along with Tainan’s Sababoy, Tsai Chi Ya, and Hāng-á Niau, are all cute and popular city mascots as well. Okinawa and Tainan in turn both share a rich maritime culture and history. Both cities prospered from sea trade, a fact reflected in their local culture and festivals. The launch of the new Tigerair Taiwan routes not only narrows the distance in space and time between Tainan and southwest Japan. The increased travel traffic will stimulate bilateral tourism, trade/economic and cultural exchanges, and showcase the unique charm of Tainan as an international tourism city.
Director-General Lin Kuo-hua from the Tourism Bureau of Tainan City said that the “Tainan-Kumamoto” and “Tainan-Okinawa” routes are currently expected to operate two flights a week. The inaugural flight for Tainan-Kumamoto will take off on December 23 (every Tuesday and Friday) while Tainan-Okinawa services will commence on December 25 (every Thursday and Sunday). More details about the flights will be published by Tigerair Taiwan. The launch of the two new international routes should see more Japanese travelers visit Tainan to experience its authentic local food, history & culture, and city charm.
The Tourism Bureau reinforced City Hall’s determination to continue lobbying for more international routes and exchange opportunities. More convenient international air links will hopefully introduce more international travelers to the diversity and hospitality of Tainan in the future. City Hall will also work with its many partners on tourism and marketing to transform Tainan into a key international travel destination that welcomes travelers from across the world looking to experience the rich cultural heritage and modern vibes of the city!
