Nestled among rolling hills and shimmering waters, Hutoupi Reservoir Scenic Area offers beautiful lake views, rich biodiversity, and a wide range of leisure activities. From barbecues and camping to solar-powered boat rides and pedal boats, it has long been a favorite suburban escape for both locals and visitors looking to spend time in nature. To promote tourism development and enrich the travel experience in Tainan’s mountain region, the Tainan City Government Tourism Bureau has integrated transportation and local resources to launch the 168 Hutoupi Old Street Route operated by Taiwan Tourist Shuttle. Linking key stops including Xinshi Railway Station, Xinhua Old Street, and Hutoupi Reservoir Scenic Area, the route offers a convenient and more immersive travel experience, making it easier than ever to explore Xinhua and discover the unique tapestry of nature, culture, and local character that defines this mountain town.
Huang Wei-che, Mayor of Tainan, noted that the Xinhua district is home to a variety of well-known attractions, including Xinhua Old Street, Tavokan Cultural District, Xinhua Fruit and Vegetable Market, and Hutoupi Reservoir Scenic Area. Here, historic streetscapes seamlessly meet natural scenery, creating a canvas of endless travel possibilities. In recent years, the city government has continued enhancing the environment and visitor facilities at Hutoupi Reservoir Scenic Area while introducing locally rooted gift brands to the gift shop. A visit to the area thus extends beyond sightseeing, inviting travelers to explore local culture, everyday life, and regional specialties, all in one trip.
Lin Guo-hua, Director-General of the Tainan City Government Tourism Bureau, noted that Hutoupi Reservoir Scenic Area is an ideal destination for visitors seeking a relaxed getaway. With abundant natural resources and comprehensive recreational spaces, the scenic area is suitable for travelers of all ages and interests. Visitors can stroll along lakeside paths, wander through forest trails rich in phytoncides, cycle through the scenic surroundings, or enjoy a variety of water-based activities. As the landscape shifts with the seasons, the area invites travelers to unwind in greenery and tranquility, just moments from Tainan City. Families can spend time at the all-ages nature-inspired playground and stop by the Environmental Education and Ecological Center to learn about the fascinating world of crickets. Older visitors, meanwhile, may prefer a leisurely walk along the accessible lakeside promenade, taking in the expansive lake and mountain views at an unhurried pace.
Just beside the entrance to the scenic area, visitors will find a gift shop stocked with carefully curated local products that reflect the industries, specialties, and creative energy of the Xinhua district. One standout is Xinxing Beekeeping Farm, which raises its bees in a pristine mountain environment rich in native plants and seasonal blossoms. Committed to natural development and minimal processing, the farm preserves the honey’s original flavor and nutritional value. Longan honey, wildflower honey, and bee pollen are among its most popular offerings, prized for their delicate textures and layered flavors. They are popular choices for daily culinary enjoyment as well as for their wellness benefits. Mogather, meanwhile, has built its brand around the idea of local revitalization. For years, it has been dedicated to integrating rural industries and elevating local brands, carefully selecting high-quality local produce and transforming it through product development, design, and marketing. Its products range from dried fruits and rice-based snacks to specialty processed farm goods. Quality and flavor remain at the heart of every product, while thoughtful packaging and stories rooted in local culture add depth and character. Each item carries a sense of place and local heritage, enhancing both the appeal and distinctiveness of these regional gifts.
According to the Tourism Bureau, the integration of transportation, on-site experiences, and local brands makes Tainan’s mountain region easier to access and explore while creating a more heartfelt and memorable travel experience. The city will continue to weave together the unique traits of local resources and regional industries to cultivate a tourism landscape rich in both cultural depth and leisure appeal, thereby encouraging more travelers to discover the hidden gems of Tainan’s mountain region.
